Norpro Nutmeg/Ginger Grater Review

I didn't buy this thing to grate nutmegs, as I inherited two old-fashioned nutmeg graters from my grandmother. I needed to grate ginger, and this clearly says it will. Well, it won't. In fact, it's just about worthless for that purpose. It makes a nearly unusable mess out of the ginger root, which of course is a somewhat juicy, quite fibrous affair. Then you need a special, dedicated brush to get the nearly unusable mess off the dang thing. Very little of the mess came through to the backside where it could have been scooped off. Instead it all entwined with the teeth on the front.

Now this thing is heavyweight and nicely machined as well as nice looking. The compartment cover fits is a very satsfying way. However, the engineering is horrible. First of all, one doesn't store even a dry nutmeg in an all-but-airtight compartment. Grandma's graters have storage compartments, too, which allow the free flow of air. But more importantly, it won't grate ginger properly. What good is all the beauty if function is missing? Of course, it may very well do your nutmeg OK for all I know. (The fine print also mentions garlic, citrus and chocolate.) I can't return it to Amazon because I got it on one of those 4 for 3 deals so would lose more than I'd gain. I put it right back in its package and hope I need to give a gift to someone who needs a nutmeg grater.

Fish and Veggie Steamer by Progressive Review

Norpro Pizza Baking Stone Review

I bought this stone to try out some new bread and pizza recipes. The stone cracked in half after about 20 uses over the course of 6 weeks. It broke in half while making pizza, not while cleaning it or moving it. It is possible some sauce got on the stone, which also can create cracking, but I expected the stone to be more sturdy. When it was whole, the stone worked great, creating a crackly, even-colored crust. But it is too delicate and not an adequate thickness for the high heat involved making pizza. The overall surface area of the stone is a healthy 13 x 15 inches. But the product description suggest that the stone is 2 inches thick. That's a bad typo. It's actually 1/2 inch thick, possibly only 3/8 inch. A good bread/pizza stone should be at least 3/4 inch thick. I should have known it was a typo, since expensive stones are rarely more than 1 inch thick.

Norpro 10-Inch Tin Springform Review

This is a nice sized pan (about the size around as a frisbee or bakery bought pie).The sides and bottom make a good seal and it is pretty sturdy.I mean you could smash it flat if you wanted to, but it was definitely made to hold the wait of your baked products, much stronger than those foil pans but not as strong as stainless steel.

Affordable and durable, so why the 3 stars then?The bottom of the pan is made with many little indents (think "the surface of a golf ball" but on a plane not a sphere).I think the manufacturer meant for this to be some sort of release mechanism like the chef's knives made with indents so things don't stick to the side sof the knife as you chop or slice.That's what I THINK they are meant for, but it doesn't seem to work.For me it just makes things come out with a checkboard like pattern on top and little bits of food get stuck in the indents.Perhaps it work better if you used the studded side?But it came with the indent side up, so that's how I use it.

On a quick, more positive note: with the side part removed this makes an excellent 10" pizza pan too!

KitchenAid Silicone Square Cake Pan, Red Review

This is my wonderful kitchen find of 2005 - I purchased several pieces, including this one and potholders from KitchenAid.

Imagine pans that will never rust, get scratched or bent.They cook evenly, clean up beautifully. A particular favorite are the potholders which are also great jar openers, trivets and impromptu food covers for small microwave containers.

I have baked brownies, chickens, casseroles and vegetables in this thing. All came out perfectly.

Don't think they would be broiler friendly - I still use Pyrex for that!

Norpro Silicone 3-Piece Egg/Pancake Ring Set Review

While the product quality is good, these 3 shapes are REALLY large.Much larger than I anticipated. The circle is 5-1/8 inch in outside diameter, and 4-5/8 inch inside diameter.I think this is really too large for a single egg (unless you use a jumbo egg)....maybe two eggs would be more like it.Great for a pancake, though. The circle is way too big for cooking an egg for an english muffin sandwich, or even a large hamburg roll.The star would be OK for a single egg, or a smaller pancake, but the heart too large for an egg....again, OK for a pancake.

Taco Mex Taco Plate 4PACK Review

My kids favorite food is mexican and they always made a mess while trying to hold the tacos and put toppings on them or when they would set it on the plate they would fall over and food would fall out. Orka Personal 12-Ounce Oval Steamer, Blue Review

This is just great! So much easier than dragging out the pot of water and metal steamer. I have had no trouble cleaning it, I just swish it out and rinse while it is still warm and damp.

Keep in mind that this is quite small, definitely not enough for a side dish for two people (well, maybe if it's peas or something) and barely enough broccoli for one if you are a big vegetable eater. I bought a larger one as well for bigger meals.

Norpro 10 Inch Nonstick Bread Pan Review

My ceramic and pryrex bread pans were sticking, even with oil and a sprinkling of corn meal.
With this pan, when the bread is baked you just turn it upside down and it falls out.
I just wish the sides were wider and higher because the loaf is pretty small for bread slices.

The KitchenAid can opener is actually the best can opener I have used/owned. If you mutilated your hand, then it's probably your technique. No can opener has a mind of its own.The peeler is also good. I also have the KitchenAid pizza cutter and ice cream scoop, which are great as well. The pizza cutter cuts amazingly well. The other tools - spatula, basting spoon, tongs - are ginormous compared to my small hands so it's difficult to handle the weight. The smaller tools, however, are invaluable.

These flexible cutting boards are truly awesome. 1) They don't take up a lot of space. 2) They're easy to clean. 3) They don't cost big bucks. 4) They work just fine and being able to bend them really helps get your items off the cutting board and into a pot, bowl or discard the scraps. 5) And the various colors actually helps us make sure we don't go cutting some vegetables on the same cutting board that just had a piece of meat on it.

Progressive International Can Colander Review

I just love this ingenious product.Growing up, my parents had a white plastic one, which they still have and use by the way, so I knew it was a good product.We used it ONLY for straining the water out of the tuna fish can - it worked great.I was always afraid of cutting my hand on the sharp edged tuna fish can covers and this was a perfect solution. I was able to get ALL the water or oil out of the tuna fish (I just hate it when there is some left in there - makes the tuna meat too mushy)and never cut myself.Well, now I own this stainless steel one and I know it will last a lifetime and look great. Worth the extra money.Also, I purchased a new can opener (see my other review for that) and it breaks the seal on the can and leaves NO sharp edges on the can.Well, when you get the smooth cover off, guess what? You can't use it to strain the juice out of corn niblets, peas or other canned vegetables. Well using my Stainless Steel Colander I strain all the water out of it, no problem. So now I use it more than ever. And I just rinse it out and put it in the dish drainer and it is ready for my next use.Truly a kitchen necessity. Don't miss out. Worth every penny and more.

Norpro V Slicer Grater, Mandolin Review

First, the Norpro is %100 compatible with the Bron, including the Bron's replacement blades (available in a wide variety of sizes, though not at amazon--yet).
Safety: First, if you haven't put in at least a hundred hours on a mandoline, be sure to use protection.No, not that ...worthless/dangerous pusher.Use a butcher's glove (or "oyster glove"), preferably a chain mail one.You could get by with significantly more affordable Kevlar or "Fibers Woven with Stainless Steel Threading" ones, but you will be more prone to bruising and nicks.Second, keep your eye on the blade, not on the vegetable.Third, use smooth, swift strokes applying as much pressure toward the mandoline's face as you do on the stroke itself.Last, and most importantly- don't rush!Take your time, maintain your focus, zone out that burning smell coming from the oven.
The mandoline produces narrow shallow decorative crinkles.While waffle cut vegetables are quite possible with this sturdy industry standard, it takes a lot of adjusting and they come out thin without good definition of holes.For a better waffle cut consider a stand alone crinkle cutter.The washboard style ones typically aren't adjustable, so I'd recommend a hand held crinkle blade (look for deeper/wider scallops).
To produce uniform slices, you can either move the julienne blades to neutral or remove the blades completely.The first method often produces slices with nicks on them from where the slices catch on the hanging julienne blades.The second method is time consuming and may lead to eventually stripping out the nuts (so be careful not to over tighten).
This is a time saving and indispensable tool once you get accustomed to it.It could use more documentation.

Baker's Rack - Coffee Finish Review

Bakers rack is okay -- not quite as high end and sturdy as it appears to be in the pictures.The paint was scraped off one of the medalions, may have happened in shipping.Dealer shipped quickly, and it came well packaged.Looks pretty good once I touched up the paint and got it decorated, but still not exactly what I was hoping for.

Progressive International Meat Pounder Review

This Progressive International Meat Pounder does a good job of tenderizing boneless cuts of beef, veal and poultry. It's very easy to hold while pounding your meat, and will quickly help flatten meats to an even thickness, far better than one of those lightweight wooden mallets. I picked up one of these when my cheap (i.e. dollar store) mallet-style pounder broke the first day that I had it. Mallets meat pounders do work, but they put a bit of stress and shock on your wrist every time they make contact. You'll be able to prepare a lot of meats with this without wearing out your wrists.

This meat pounder has a stainless steel pounding surface. Its round shape is ideal for pounding meats and poultry, as well as pressing patties for hamburgers. It weighs a little more than a pound, so it's not too light or heavy to do the job at hand, and does most of the work with little effort. You can use the edge of the stainless steel disk for tougher meat cuts. The round shape is perfect for pounding and tenderizing all kinds of meat, and it's perfect for pressing beef patties for hamburgers.

You can spend a lot more on a heavier meat pounder, but you have to ask yourself if it's really necessary. This one has a comfortable design, with a durable, easy to grip handle. Since the disk is made of stainless steel, it's safe to use in the dishwasher.

I've use this for smashing peeled garlic cloves easily, and used it to break up chocolate for occasional baking as well. It has even been used to effortlessly break up ice cubes upon occasion, and is the perfect shape to put on some pot lids to weigh them down during cooking.

About the only thing that it didn't work for was crushing walnuts, and for that one really needs a nut chopper. With apologies to Vince "You'll Love My Nuts" Offer (the ShamWow guy), I'll pass and go for the Progressive International Heavy Duty Nut Chopper for that job.

There are tougher and more expensive ways to pound your meat, but this one does the job for me.

Progressive Internationla Silicone Loaf Baking Liner Review

I had to trim these to fit the loaf pans I use, but it was very easy with a box cutter and straight edge. They work pretty good for baking but more material stuck to them than to parchment paper. They did peel off the loafs easily though. They don't clean as easily as the woven type do and when they are dry, if you have 2 or more they stick together and you have to peel them apart like colorforms. Also dish towel lint sticks to them.

Handy Gourmet Defrosting Tray Review

It works great, as well as the original "Miracle Thaw", but better since it sets in a plastic drip tray. We don't recommend filling the tray with water, as it quickly chills and thus slows down the defrosting time. ANOTHER TIP: Leave the meat in it's wrapper if you'll be gone all day, to slow the defrosting, preventing it from sitting out at room temperature too long. LASTLY: Unwrapped meat should be covered with a sheet of wax paper or foil to protect it from dust, pet dander, and other stuff that's floating in the air.

Norpro Stainless Steel 10 Inch x 15 Inch Baking Sheet Review

No jelly rolls as of yet have graced this pan, but if I baked any I am certain they would be well pleased.The fish stick's were quite happy, so I am guessing the jelly rolls would be too.

Heating the pan to nearly 500 degrees (fish sticks like it hot, 475) caused it to warp (momentarily startling my fish sticks), but it does return to its normal shape after removing from this infernal Hades like temperature.Please note that this is a temperature you would never wish to visit upon a non-stick pan.Over 400 degrees and non-stick becomes violently toxic spewing forth lecherous vapors that kill birds, and you know what they say about canaries in coal mines.Always best to stay away from non-stick, but I'm sure that's why your considering the pristine qualities of stainless to begin with.However, the shiny surface is what attracted me (I like shiny things).

As a previous supporterof the noble qualities of this pan commented, GOO gone works admirably at removing the barnacle laden adhesive from the surface (only two small spots on this pan).

I am now secretly abducting all of our rusting and peeling non-stick in favor of Norpro stainless shiny things.Shh, my wife does not know as of yet, but she will thank me.Muwhahahahaha.

Norpro 8 Inch Nonstick Bread Pan Review

I make 8 loaves of bread a week.These pans are by far the favorite.They make a beautiful med. sized loaf.So many pans are too wide and the bread comes out looking flat and pathetic.This will be the 5th and 6th ones I've purchased.I've had my other pans for about 10 years.These brown the bread beautifully and evenly. I waited to purchase 2 more because they seem rather pricey compared to what you might catch on sale at a discount store but don't bother with the other types (I did and it was a disappointment).Make the investment--you won't be sad you did.I have the longer 12inch as well and they are wonderful too.They just make a much MUCH longer loaf, which is probably hard for most to find bags for.Don't waste your money on a cheap pan if you are going to the trouble to bake real food.
