The first time I tried this, it turned out great! One trick that is helpful: spray the inserts with no-stick cooking spray each time before pouring the batter - it helps a lot. My squares weren't as perfect as they are in the photo, but it still works great. You can also have lots of fun with white cake mix and food coloring. I did a yellow and blue checkerboard cake that turned out great.
